Building on the momentum generated at the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning and Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) around the central importance of ensuring reproductive rights and contraceptive choice, the RESPOND Project (funded by the United States Agency for International Development [USAID], and managed by EngenderHealth) sponsored an expert consultation in September 2012 – A Fine Balance: Contraceptive Choice in the 21st Century – to deliberate on how to move contraceptive choice from rhetoric to reality. The Champions4Choice blog was born out of this consultation as a way to foster a growing network of champions and is intended as a forum the exchange of ideas, views, and resources to advance thinking about, and commitment to, contraceptive choice and rights. Although the RESPOND Project ended in 2014, EngenderHealth continues to support the Champions4Choice blog.
This blog is part of a long-term effort to realize informed choice in practice by increasing equitable access to the widest possible range of family planning (FP) method options and preventing both coercion and barriers to access. Blog topics will cover issues influencing rights and choice from all levels of the health care system – policy, service delivery, and community – and features champions and their work, guest bloggers, resources, publications, news, and upcoming events.
We invite you to join our network and contribute to the dialogue about how we can build on the momentum for rights and choice at the global level and engage those working at the country level to make FP programs more client-centered and rights-focused, so that people everywhere can access the services they want, when and where they want them, and to be able to have the number of children they desire.
